LASIK and Refractive Surgery
Laser Vision Correction and Refractive Surgery are umbrella terms for several elective procedures that can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. These procedures have become widely popular, but it is important to note that not everyone is a candidate for surgery. Your doctor can help you decide whether refractive surgery is for you after a consultation and full examination. Your doctor will consider:
- The general health of the patient and their eyes
- Any underlying medical conditions
- Amount of correction required
- Shape of the individual’s cornea
- Corneal thickness
- Pupil diameter in the dark
Florida Eye Associates has been a leader in vision correction since the early days of refractive surgery. In fact, Dr Andrew Zorbis performed the first refractive surgery in Brevard County in the early 1980s. Refractive surgery has changed a lot since those days. Today, our procedures are done at our ambulatory surgery center, designed to make your surgical experience as safe and efficient as possible. Our specially trained staff will answer all of your questions and make sure you know exactly what to expect, every step of the way.
The objective of refractive surgery is to decrease, if not eliminate, dependence on glasses and/or contact lenses, by improving visual acuity by improving or eliminating refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Various surgical techniques are available to permanently change the shape of the cornea, resulting in improved visual acuity.
LASIK stands for Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis and is just one type of refractive procedure available today. Your doctor can best explain the available options and what is right for you.
